Environmental protection is self-evident at Berliner Wasserbetriebe. By observing environmental aspects as well as the economic and social concerns, we ensure the basis for life for future generations.

The water cycle is the focus of quality and environmental protection. The groundwater is protected from contamination by Berliner Wasserbetriebe and consumed only to the extent that its replacement is assured. The qualified operation of the modern wastewater treatment plants ensures a minimum burden on lakes and rivers. Environmental protection means for us sustainable resource management through efficient use of engineering, material, energy and process media and the avoidance of wastes and emissions.

The limitations on activities in groundwater extraction areas and our plants contributes significantly to the protection of nature and animal life, since these areas provide refuge for many threatened animal and plant species.

Through continuous research and development, we work alone and with partners such as the Kompetenzzentrum Wasser Berlin and Berlin universities on the development of innovative processes for sustainable water management. We evaluate new processes, technologies and services with respect to their cost effectiveness, implementability and environmental compatibility even at the planning stage. We consistently integrate third parties involved into our environmental protection measures.

Every employee is aware that he or she has a role to play in the implementation of the environmental policy. The environmental awareness and qualification of our employees is assured and enhanced by selective training and further qualification.

Our actions are oriented to the needs of our customers. To this end, we maintain an intensive dialogue with the public and provide information on our environmental policy. In addition we work constructively with the authorities and contribute to ensuring environmental responsibility among the people living in the region.
