Climate protection and climate change are the topics of the day. But what for many has only now become topical has been part of the way of life for Berliner Wasserbetriebe for many years. Climate and environmental protection play an important role for the company.

The processes for the water supply to the city, the wastewater disposal and the sewage treatment are energy-intensive and result in CO2 emissions (e.g. combustion of diesel, fuel oil or gas, exhaust gases from the vehicle fleet, sourcing of electrical energy). The emissions are thereby always dependent on the volume of drinking water supplied and sewage treated. On the other hand, energy is won from sewage sludge and digester gas.

The environmental aspects have an equal standing in the management policy at Berliner Wasserbetriebe as the economic and social aspects. Environmental protection means here sustainable resource management through efficient use of personnel, engineering, financial means, material, energy and process media and the avoidance of wastes and emissions. Climate protection forms an integral part of environmental protection.
