Grease separators, what needs to be observed?

In accordance with the Terms and Conditions for Sewage in Berlin (ABE), owners of commercial properties on which substances accrue which are lighter than water, such as oil or grease, are obliged to install and operate devices for separating these substances according to the applicable technical standards.

Furthermore, the discharge of commercial waste water into the public sewage system requires a licence. These licences are issued by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. Here is an initial overview of what needs to be observed when installing and operating a grease separator.

Installation Dimensions

This means:

  • determining the nominal size of the grease separator: rate of flow in litres/second

Responsibility:

Duty to Provide Information to the Environmental Agency

This means:

  • notification of operation of a grease separator in accordance with §38 Article 3 of the Berlin Water Law

Responsibility:
operator or caterer


Routine Maintenance, Cleaning and Disposal

This means:

  • company log book and documentation
  • minimum monthly cleaning according to DIN 4040-100
  • annual maintenance according to DIN 4040-100, Clause 12.3

Responsibility:
operator or caterer, certified waste disposal company, certified expert


Carrying Out of Inspections

This means:

  • initial inspection DIN 4040-100, Clause 12.4 at start-up (leak test)
  • general inspection - every five years according to DIN 4040-100

Responsibility:
certified expert


Installation and Start-Up

This means:

  • installation of the respective design (above or below ground) and manufacturer instruction
  • initial inspection required at start-up

Responsibility:
installer, certified expert
