In 1999, the State of Berlin integrated the Berliner Wasserbetriebe into a private sector holding model. Up to October 2012, the State of Berlin held of 50.1 percent equity interest in the group, while the companies RWE and Veolia (formerly known as Vivendi) each held 24.95 percent.
At the end of October 2012, the State of Berlin acquired the shares held by RWE-Veolia-Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH and in November 2013 it acquired the shares held by Veolia. The State of Berlin thereby increased its share in the Berlinwasser Group from 50.1 % to 100 %.
